The Rika Micro-region

Romania in Europe

Romania is situated at the border of Central and Southeast Europe, at the northern part of Balkan Peninsula, at the eastern part of the Carpathian Basin. The surface is 237500 square kilometers; the population in 1992 was 22,7 million. The country has an important transit role between West and East Europe and the Black Sea, and also between the countries of Balkan Peninsula. It is outstanding the geographical importance of the Danube waterway and the ship traffic on the Black Sea. The most important highlands of the country are the Carpathians which surround the Transylvanian basin; east and south from this mountain-frame are situated the Sub-Carpathians, the hilly countries and then after the lowlands. Romania is a country with various natural history properties. A third of the most important surface shapes refer to harmonious relief structure. Discovering the potential of the Romanian natural environment is an immediate economical interest. All these suppose the integrated valuation and research of the geographical environment. In the valuation from the point of view of tourism is very important to determine that the given tourism area how much is laden "airy", are there possibilities to develop, or the build up is already finished there. Romania's competitiveness in tourism is determined by those touristic values which attract the foreign guests, tourist. We have the adorned Carpathians with rocky mountains, which offers the various possibilities of high-altitude holidays and winter sports.

Transylvania
The Carpathians surround the Transylvanian basin. Rivers parcel up the Transylvanian basin's 400-700 meter high hills. 130 years ago Orbán Balázs in the preface of his epoch-making work titled "Description of the Szeklerland" presents Transylvania with the following sentences: "Undoubtedly the most interesting part of our country is the area from east to Királyhágó, which is named today - after the fortunate execution of the union - Transylvania only after the geographical notion. This part of the county, surrounded by high mountains, in many places covered by virgin forests, not possessing yet railway, the tool of spreading ideas and circulation, in maybe the most unknown and closed area, and it is easier to arrive to America over the ocean, than to the Szeklerland at the ends of the country. However this area is which calls the attention because this is the citadel, the powerful defender line of the country, where heroic people love the freedom and the country. And just this most interesting land at the ends, the beautiful Szeklerland is the less known, about we also know least. So it is a pressing necessity to explore and popularize it." If we think about, the message of Orbán Balázs today has the same importance like 130 years ago. It is our duty to discover our environment and to present to other people, because it is useful for our guest, but for us too.

The Rika Micro-region
The area of the North-Persany (Persani) between the river Olt and Hagymasi (Hasmasu) pass is called "Rika-mountain", briefly "Rika" by the population of the environs, named after the wife, Réka, of the legendary Attila king, whose grave is somewhere here according to the tradition.
The Rika Micro-regional Association is situated at the eastern side of Inner-Transylvania, including the border settlements of Harghita, Covasna and Brasov counties, around the North-Persany (Persani) and Rika-mountain, surrounded by the Carpathians. Its boundary to east is the line of the Eastern Carpathians, which are followed parallel with the Gorgenyi (Gurghiului) and the volcanic Harghita mountains. Between this two lines are the Gyergyoi (Gheorgheni), Felcsiki and Alcsiki basins, aligned one after the other, the former Csikszek (Ciuc region). At the western side of Harghita, near Varghis, Nagyhomorod and Kishomorod (Homorod) rivers, at the upper part of Nagykukullo and Kiskukullo (Tarnava) rivers is the former Udvarhelyszek (Odorhei zone). At east, near Kiskukullo, around Nyarad (Niraj), across Targu Mures and Mures river to Mezoseg, the southern-southeastern part of today’s Mures county, which is the boundary of the former Marosszek, and at south the boundaries of the former Haromszek, Erdovidek and Barcasag. Almost 70% of the area is hilly country. Thanks to the natural endowments there are possibilities to develop the animal husbandry and tourism; this latter is one of the most important, not enough utilized possibilities of the Rika Micro-regional Association, almost the only competitive factor of the region. The possibilities of the Rika Micro-regional Association are hidden first of all in rural tourism. This tourism sector is in changing all around the world, to the direction of wellness - body maintenance and natural therapeutic possibilities. With a little reorganization and the needed marketing methods we have chances in a short term to become competitive, because in this environment almost every kind of tourism idea can be realized, for example hunting tourism, wanderer tourism, or cave tourism.
The beauties of the landscape of the micro-region are offering to the tourist the largest variety of nature's beauties, the fields covered by wild flowers, the rocky Carpathians, the Rika mountain and the close Harghita, the large variety of the beautiful plants, part of them growing here from bygone days. Here are maybe the most slender pine trees of the Carpathians, the most beautiful fields, the narcissus-fields, the peat-moors, and here feels good to live brown bear, deer, the wolves, and in the rivlets the speedy trout. The surface of the Rika Micro-regional Association is almost 40000 hectares, and its population is around 8000. It is a varied natural area between Szeklerland and the former Szaszland, and also the section of the southern part of the former Udvarhelyszek and Haromszek. The micro-region contains in fact the settlements near the Rika-mountain, and from the valleys of Nagyhomorod, Kishomorod, Varghis and Olt rivers.
The region of Rika today is unfortunately one of the most disadvantageous parts of Szeklerland. We can say also that it is situated in the "shadow" of traffic and economy, far from the good transport ways, the most important streamlines of the market economy, fighting to find contacts with the world. May be felt the lack of railway and the neglected condition of the ways. The disadvantage became more significant even after 1990. The population-maintaining power became weak and the phenomenon of ageing is maybe unstoppable.
Recognizing the danger of decline of the rural areas, villages from Rika micro-region, Homorodalmas (Meresti), Okland (Ocland), Vargyas (Varghis), Alsorakos (Rakos), Zsombor (Jimbor) and Homorodjanosfalva (Ionesti), local governments, private persons, organizations, institutions and enterprises which wanted to change the actual conditions, to action in order to develop, with the support of Harghita County Council considered necessary to establish an association which helps to enforce the common interest, to reach the common goals.
